A selfie of Alyssa and Michael in a bar in Cartagena, Colombia. Alyssa is wearing a Panama hat and white tee, and Michael is wearing a black tee. They are both sweaty but smiling.

Whoa.

It feels a bit like I fell off the face of the earth there.

Life has been really hectic lately and I haven’t had as much time for this space as I would have liked. But that’s just how things go sometimes, you know?

Michael and I got back from Cartagena early Wednesday morning, and have been more or less treading water since then. This post was intended to go up last weekend, but it just… didn’t.

Better late than never, right? Here are a few things that caught my eye online recently:

Travel

In NYC? Here’s where to get those limited-edition Rimowa MetroCards, if they’re still available.

Though still a pretty young venture, Here Magazine (from the folks at Away) has finally developed a decent number of city guides. I enjoyed reading the guide for Cartagena in anticipation of our trip, but as always, I never rely on just one source when planning our trips.

Previously… Two years ago I published a recipe for pistachio ice cream, which we recently made and devoured, and shared what we did over the course of a weekend in Nashville. Last year we visited Jacksonville as part of our “year of Florida” and I shared my packing list for that summer weekend trip. I also included a tutorial for brewing coffee at home with a Chemex, which is one way we save money while still enjoying a coffeehouse-worthy cup each day.

Life & Home

I loved reading this round-up of parents commenting on raising children around the world. Which story is your favorite?

Why the French love to say, “no.”

Two cute home tours this week from Lee and Andrea!

Style

I’m curious to see how Target’s re-release of some of their past partner designs goes. I happened to be in the store during one launch and had the opportunity to witness a real, live purse fight (down to the tugging on the handles!).

Rebecca has a great round-up of ethical clothing options for tall gals.

Cuyana released a crossbody version of their travel case (reviewed here) and it’s super cute!

Xin took the leap and sold a few pieces through TheRealReal—and detailed her experience doing so.

Drooling over the modern-southwest vibes of this Etsy shop.

Things I bought recently…

1. Panama Hat (purchased in Cartagena; linked to similar) | 2. Jumpsuit (thrifted; linked to similar) | 3. Saint James Breton Top | 4. Arden Cove Slash-Resistant Strap |

Shortly before we left I stumbled on a cute jumpsuit* on Poshmark, and once the seller confirmed she could ship it same-day, crossed my fingers and hit submit order. It showed up two days later (which is kind of a blessing and a curse with Poshmark; it’s almost instant gratification), and nearly fit. I figured I’d need to hem the legs a bit shorter, but I was surprised to find the bust and waist were too large. My sewing skills are pretty limited, but I managed to alter the jumpsuit without adding any fastenings by raising the neckline slightly.

Pre-trip I also ordered this slash-resistant purse strap to attach to my J. Crew bag. It’s not an exact match for the color or material, but it’s close enough it doesn’t bug me. What does bother me is the fact the black dye bled onto a white shirt I wore while we were in Colombia. I’ve messaged the brand but have yet to hear back; in the meantime, I’m going to keep trying to remove the stain.

While we were in Colombia I picked up another Panama Hat* (which is probably surprising if you’ve read this post). I didn’t bring my folding hat along with me this time and succumbed to a bit of peer pressure when I found a gorgeous one in a shop in the city (seriously, everyone was wearing one in Cartagena). Thankfully the two hats are different enough to justify keeping both.

On that note, now that we’re home I’m eyeing my closet carefully and am feeling a little dismayed at everything I’ve added this summer, and want to rein things back in a bit and carefully consider my purchases. I’ve had a Breton top on my list forever, and when I found a vintage version secondhand I took a chance and ordered it. It arrived yesterday, and I’m so pleased with the slightly masculine cut and heavyweight fabric. I think it will be a great staple for work and travel—you’ll probably see it in a few packing list posts when the weather cools!

What are some ways you cope with the feeling of not having enough time?

  1. I feel you on feeling like I’ve dropped off the face of the earth. Life has been so hectic, it’s hard to get into a flow. And I’m TWO trips behind now, sigh. I think I have 15 post half done, but I never get them done.

Those Rimowa subways cards are a must!

This year has been one of my highest shopping years–2-3x more expensive than the usual. And I just bought some shoes from Tradesy. Hoping to rein it in next year.
