A view of a kitchen from another room; the dishwasher, fridge, sink, and oven are all visible and there is a window over the sink

It’s happening.

I know I’ve been saying this for a while now, but I feel like now I can officially say that we’re moving since we signed a lease this week for a place in Charlotte.

Despite not working at the moment, my day-to-day feels busier than ever: packing, making phone calls, rehoming things we no longer need…

It’s our first time moving out of our home city, and we’re doing it all ourselves. I’m learning a lot about paperwork, and all of the steps we need to take to make sure everything is in order (but I know there are other countries where the hoops you need to jump through are much larger and more numerous than the ones here – so for that I am grateful!), but it is a bit draining. Mostly though, I feel anxious and ready to just make the move so that I can get back to writing more frequently here. One step at a time, though!

Here are some interesting articles I’ve come across in the past two weeks (when I was probably supposed to be doing other things):

Travel

Jess shares her tips for shooting better vacation photos. I appreciate the extra boost of confidence to ask someone else to take our photo; it’s still a challenge for me, personally.

This Airbnb scam sounds like a nightmare, and here’s what the company plans to do about it. As a frequent user of the platform, I can’t wait to hear more about the verification process.

I’d be surprised if the loss of revenue from airport parking due to the prevalence of rideshare apps isn’t part of these switches, too.

Food

We made sopes for the first time this week (trying to use up as many ingredients as possible!) and they were delicious. I have to say, sorry Maseca – I think I like this masa harina better.

Two of my favorite things, combined in one article: baking and feminism.

Bookmarking this rough-puff pastry recipe for the times when I run out of Trader Joe’s frozen version! It’s one of my favorite things to have on hand for quick meals or potlucks.

Life & Home

What do you think of Instagram’s shift to start hiding likes on photos?

I’ve always been fascinated by languages (my degree is in Linguistics, after all!), and this article made my heart sing.

Yikes.

Vetta just released their last capsule of the year and they’re running a “Create Your Own Capsule” promo where you can take 10% off 2 travel-friendly items, 15% off 3 items, or if you buy four items, the fifth one is free (details here). Not bad, huh? [edit: site closed]

DECIEM is offering a slower approach to the holiday-sale madness: 23% off almost all of their products, all month long. This is a great way to promote thoughtful consumption, without using the FOMO-tactic lots of other retailers employ.

It’s been a minute since Everlane’s Coming Soon page excited me, but that ReCashmere Lounge Jumpsuit has me craving movie nights at home with hot cocoa…

Just a quick heads-up that I will be consigning/donating any items remaining in my Poshmark closet before we move – if there’s something that strikes your fancy, feel free to make an offer! Oh, and if it’s your first Poshmark purchase, just use code _ALYSSAN at sign up to take $10 off your first purchase (I’ll get credit in return, which makes it a win-win!).

When doing some good isn’t good enough.

Grateful for Leah’s review of a pair of travel-ready boots I’ve had my eye on for a while.
