Site of the sit-ins in Greensboro, NC

Have you seen today’s Google Doodle?

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Greensboro Sit-in that took place at the Woolworth’s Department Store (above) in Greensboro, North Carolina – which we had the chance to visit last weekend. I’ll share more about our visit to the site, now the International Civil Rights Museum, in an upcoming post. In the meantime, you can read more about the sit-in and the artist behind the Doodle here.

Here at home, things are moving slowly and not quite as I’d like. I found that my tires had been slashed, just as I was jumping in my car to head to a PT appointment. Thankfully I was due to replace them anyway – but I’m mostly worried it could happen again. This week I’ve been stuck inside thanks to some sort of cold, but I think I’ve finally turned the corner. I guess if I had to choose a time to be sick, now is probably best. We’re off to visit family next weekend and renting a cabin in the mountains the following weekend – here’s hoping Michael doesn’t catch it next!

Aside from making my way through a box of these tree-free tissues (I’d love to be team hankie but I just am not), here’s what I’ve been reading online lately:

Travel

Excuse me, what?

I’m sorry, what?

It’s scary that it took this long.

And something good: you can win a Valentine’s Day getaway to Italy from Airbnb (no longer available). Best V-Day gift ever.

Food

Though this article is based on the author’s experiences here in Charlotte, I think this is a relevant issue just about everywhere now.

An interesting look at the new Milk Bar Flagship. I hate to say it, but last time we visited NYC the offerings (at a regular Milk Bar store) felt a bit outdated and overdone.

In other cereal news, I greatly enjoyed this Man Repeller piece. (site closed)

What even is oat milk?

I don’t know how I missed this Smitten Kitchen recipe when it came out, but I will definitely be making these sometime soon! (And then I’ll probably make this Minimalist Baker recipe because PB + chocolate are hard to pass up).

Life & Home

A fascinating attempt to fix a mistake.

I keep the number of items on my fridge to a minimum, but my magnets are really just all over the place. I might just have to whip up a batch of these DIY fridge magnets to help bring order to the space.

Bookmarking this for the (hopefully) near future.

These lightweight leggings would pair well with the still-going-strong prairie dress trend. No need to wait until late Spring!

Not going to lie, I’m seriously eyeing these new pants from Madewell in Natural. A button in the front but an elastic waist in the back? *chef’s kiss*

things I bought recently

|| 1. Silk Skinny Bandana, Madewell (extra 30% off with code REALDEAL) | 2. Joselyne Slide, ABLE | 3. Noemi Belt, Nisolo [save 20% with code WAYWARDBLOG] | 4. Ceramic Sponge Holder, Sawyer Ceramics ||
I confess I made an impulse buy or two at Madewell this week: this sweet, silk floral bandana (scarf feels a bit more accurate, but okay) and the travel-size candle in this scent (no longer available) that’s supposed to be a good dupe for Diptyque’s Baies. My still-stuffy nose thinks they are indeed pretty similar in a side-by-side unlit comparison, but I can’t yet speak to the quality of the candle when lit.

Recently ABLE offered an additional discount on their sale section, and I ordered these slides I’ve had my eye on for a while. Although they fit, the strap cut into my foot quite painfully during my first few laps around the house, and back they went.

Another item I’m considering returning (but hopefully just exchanging) is this belt from Nisolo [save 20% with code WAYWARD20]. I signed up for the waitlist in my size months ago, and it recently became available so I went ahead and ordered. The belt I received is uneven in color and has a few wrinkles right out of the packaging. While I don’t mind a lived-in look, I worry about longevity. I plan on emailing their customer service to ask if perhaps I just received a lemon.

And finally, I ordered this pretty and practical sponge holder to sit by the kitchen sink. Washing dishes is now a little bit more enjoyable!

What is your favorite household item that is both beautiful and functional?

    1. It is just the sweetest sponge holder (it almost makes me look forward to doing dishes…). I just hope the tire-slashing is a one-time thing; so far so good!
