2017 Holiday Gift Guide: Travel Gifts for Him

A graphic that reads "2017 holiday gift guide: travel gifts for him"

I’ve seen lots of catalogs, magazines, and morning TV shows sharing “gift guides for guys!” that only contain things like tech items, socks, alcohol, and underwear. There’s nothing wrong with these, of course, but if you’re getting something for something special, shouldn’t it be something he’ll enjoy using? Here is a list of gifts for guys (or gals, or anyone who appreciates beautifully made, highly functional items) who like to travel.

Full disclosure, this was also the perfect opportunity to ask Michael’s opinion on what he thinks might be a good travel gift, and a few of these might be going under the tree for him (shh!)…

A black cord taco

I can think of many things I’d rather spend my time doing than untangling cords, and I’m sure he can too. Plus, you’re guaranteed a laugh when you explain this is called a “cord taco*.”

A travel shave set
Shave Travel Kit

Michael always tries to shave before we leave for a trip so we have maximum sightseeing time. One week into a two-week trip, though, I’m usually dragging him down to the drugstore to get some shaving supplies. This set has everything he’d need to stay smooth while we’re gone.

Ethical shoe options for men are few and far between compared to what’s out there for women. This is why I was incredibly surprised to find this pair from Nisolo [save 20% with code WAYWARD20] that are not only stylish but also weatherproof.

A nest camera

There are times we aren’t able to have someone come and check on our house while we are out of town. While I don’t love the idea of a camera in my home while we are in, it would be incredibly helpful to have while away. In fact, we know some folks who could see through the accompanying app that a squirrel had entered their home through their chimney and were able to have someone visit their home to take care of the situation while they were still out of the country.

A leather dopp kit

Some men are perfectly content throwing their (non-liquid) personal care items into another plastic baggie, but there’s something really nice about investing in a piece that will last for his lifetime (and probably even longer). This one* is made in the USA, and though it’s beautiful now, I bet it will look even better after years and miles traveled.

Grey slippers with a black base

Airplane floors are gross. Hotel room floors are gross. Outside is gross. But your feet don’t have to be – these slippers include a detachable sole – perfect for remaining comfortable on a long flight with the ability to head to the lavatory without having to put a pair of shoes back on.

A Nintendo Switch
Gaming Console

This is probably one of the most popular tech gifts of the season, but it’s actually a perfect gift for someone who loves to travel. It’s smaller than a tablet, features popular games, and allows for multi-player gaming (another reason to get to know your seatmate on a six-hour flight!). If that’s not enough, Netflix is heading to the console soon.

A guidebook that reads Lost in NYC
NYC Guide

As you’ve probably seen, I really enjoy traveling to New York City (okay, any city, but especially NYC). Each time I return there’s an overwhelming number of things to see and do that I’ve never done before. I honestly don’t think I’d ever get bored visiting. The internet is a vast source of information, but it’s easy to get lost in all that data. To me, nothing beats reading a good, ink-and-paper guidebook you can hold in your hands.

A lip balm from Aesop
Lip Balm*

Though I hate the humidity living here in Florida, I rarely experience the frustrations of dry skin. I’m always prepared with various balms and lotions to quench my soon-to-be thirsty skin, but these are the things Michael tends to conveniently forget to pack. I’ve found some guys are too embarrassed to use or borrow lip balms (“But it looks like lipstick!”), so buy him his very own that he’ll be proud to use, like this one*.
