I'm back with another regional guide! Today we're visiting Concord, just thirty minutes Northeast of Charlotte.
When you picture Concord, North Carolina, what is the first image that comes to mind?
Is it NASCAR?
(It’s probably NASCAR. The city’s nickname is Speed City USA, after all).
And while stock car racing is a major draw for visitors to the area, this city has so much more to offer.
With a name that means “harmony,” Concord today is a delightful unity of both new and old. Its history remains evident in the buildings lining the streets of downtown, the textile mills reimagined for the present, and its people, who happily stop to chat about their community.
Our visit to Concord was generously hosted by Explore Cabarrus, but as always, all text, photos, and opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.
A sunny December day brought us to the city center, just thirty minutes away from Charlotte, where we enjoyed strolling a typical American-style “Main Street.” It took us to the region’s largest antique mall, which is also where you can throw axes and enjoy a beer brewed onsite. And yes, we did wind up at the Speedway during our day, taking a lap around the track in the most unique way. I’m happy to share this local guide with you today, for your next trip to Concord:
CONCORD SIGHTS + ATTRACTIONS
Charlotte Motor Speedway
Charlotte Motor Speedway | 5555 Concord Pkwy S, Concord, NC 28027
Since there’s a good chance you landed on this page because you’re planning to attend an event at “America’s Home for Racing,” I’ll kick this guide off with a visit to Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Although the name suggests otherwise, Charlotte Motor Speedway is actually located in Concord. The Speedway is probably best known for hosting the Coca-Cola 600 each Memorial Day Weekend, but our visit coincided with another popular event at the track: Speedway Christmas. Four million lights are illuminated across the racetrack, all synced to festive music (played through your car stereo). Visitors drive through the displays all across the Charlotte Motor Speedway – even on the track! – and it’s truly a sight to behold. A couple of tips for first-time visitors: if you are planning to visit on a peak evening (weekends and days particularly close to Christmas), consider purchasing the Express Lane entry. This helps you bypass the bulk of the line (although we still faced about an hour’s wait on a Saturday). And definitely make a pit stop at Christmas Village to stretch your legs, use the restroom, and perhaps enjoy some tasty treats!
Not visiting during a major event? The speedway offers a number of experiences in the off-season, such as tours and racing experiences. You can even drive a race car by yourself.

Gibson Mill
Gibson Mill | 325 McGill Ave NW, Concord, NC 28027
How to describe Gibson Mill?
Well, perhaps it’s easiest to tell you a little about what it contains: a circus school, two breweries, a vintage car showroom, an axe-throwing range, an escape room, a food hall, the South’s largest antique mall, and more. I’ll be sharing a little more about those last two items later in this post – but go ahead and add this can’t-miss destination to your list now.

Mac Tabby Cat Cafe
Mac Tabby Cat Cafe | 25 Market St SW, Concord, NC 28025
Even if you think you don’t like cats, well, by the time you leave Mac Tabby, chances are those furry felines will have dug their claws right into your heart (figuratively speaking, of course). For just $12, you’ll have the privilege to hang out with twelve adoptable cuties for an hour, playing with toys, scratching behind little ears, and possibly winding up with a little cat hair on your clothes as a memento. Beer, wine, and coffee are available from the cafe just on the other side of the cat room door should you require a little liquid sustenance. Reserve online in advance for the best availability, and head to Groupon to save a little money on your visit (note: this blogger will not be held responsible for any cats adopted as a souvenir during your visit to Concord).

The Avett Brothers’ Tribute Mural
The Avett Brothers’ Tribute Mural | 25 Union St N, Concord, NC 28025
Fans of The Avett Brothers have to make a stop at the mural dedicated to the folk-rock band adjacent to the public library. This colorful mural, printed on vinyl and installed through heat application, is a bold sight to see from afar. But come closer – you’ll find the group’s lyrics emblazoned in tiny print. What a lovely way to honor this group of hometown heroes.

Luck Factory Games
Luck Factory Games | 305 McGill Ave NW Suite 80, Concord, NC 28027
Imagine a library, but instead of books, the many shelves contain board games. For just $5 per person, you can check out any of their 1000+ board games and sit and play for as long as you’d like. And while you can’t bring in your beer from neighboring High Branch Brewing Co., Luck Factory Games does offer a menu of beer, wine, and light bites to enjoy while you play. With just a pair of players, we weren’t sure it made sense to join in on this visit, but we’ve already made plans to return later this month for a friend’s birthday celebration!
WHERE TO SHOP IN CONCORD
The Depot at Gibson Mill
The Depot at Gibson Mill | 325 McGill Ave NW, Concord, NC 28027
With 88,000 square feet of antique and vintage goods, The Depot at Gibson Mill is the South’s largest antique mall – and it’s located just minutes from downtown Concord. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes as there are hundreds and hundreds of booths to explore. My tip? Pick up a map at the entrance and commit to exploring just one room or section on your visit, and return again and again (if you can!). There’s so much treasure to sift through – you don’t want to accidentally miss a hidden gem, right?

Goldberry Books
Goldberry Books | 12 Union St S, Concord, NC 28025
During our visit to Concord, I set up a poll on Instagram to ask whether you prefer paper books or e-readers – and overwhelmingly you responded that you prefer paper books. Goldberry Books is family-owned (a phrase you’ll find a lot throughout this post), and though they have only been open since the end of 2020, the charming bookstore feels ingrained in the community thanks to events and activities like their Reading Challenge and Close Reads Retreat.

ShoeBeeDo
ShoeBeeDo | 3 Union St N, Concord, NC 28025
An avid lover of sustainable fashion, I couldn’t miss a visit to ShoeBeeDo during our day in Concord. Chances are, when you walk into the shop you might feel like you’re alone – but look further back, where you’ll likely find the owner hard at work on a new pair of handmade leather shoes or a handbag. I like to let an item simmer before adding it to my wardrobe, but I can’t quite get this darling leather backpack out of my mind…

Chocolatier Barrucand
Chocolatier Barrucand | 1 Union St S, Concord, NC 28025
Name something better than an edible souvenir. (I’ll wait.).
The cases at Chocolatier Barrucand are a feast for the eyes and the mouth, with rows and rows of chocolate and pastry goodness. I know it’s a tough job to choose the perfect treat, but I believe in you. I haven’t tried everything, but from my not-very-scientific sample, I can say with near certainty that whatever you choose will be delicious.

The Bead Lady
The Bead Lady | 01 Union St N, Concord, NC 28025
If at first The Bead Lady seems like a small shop, keep walking. This storefront just keeps going, with room after room of the most colorful and precious beads and gemstones. It’s a texture lover’s dream, with everything calling out to be touched. Take a tray to pick up a few to bring home, or sit down to create a necklace or bracelet unlike anything anyone else owns. With more time I’d have loved to stay and create a wearable keepsake of our day in Concord – but the good news is we live so close, I’ll have plenty of other opportunities to do so.

The Mullet at LRP
The Mullet at LRP | 27 Union St S, Concord, NC 28025
It’s not at all clear from the name, but The Mullet at LRP is the thrift shop located next door to Lil Robert’s Place. It’s what I consider a true thrift store, with an oddball collection of clothing and home goods priced at a steal. The best part? You can start your thrifting experience at the bar next door, and bring your beer on over to shop.

Ashton Renee Boutique
Ashton Renee Boutique | 9 Cabarrus Ave W, Concord, NC 28025
Ashton Renee Boutique carries an assortment of boutique clothing and accessories, but I popped in to search for stocking stuffers. I’m happy to report there are a number of little trinkets (I snagged a locally-made candle!).

Union Street Market
Union Street Market | 10 Union St N, Concord, NC 28025
This tiny market in the heart of downtown combines the convenience offerings of a bodega-style shop with a curated selection of locally-made goods. If you can only make one stop for Carolina-produced snacks, this might just be the best place in Concord!

The Galleries
The Galleries | 65 Union St S, Concord, NC 28025
The Galleries at Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord host a rotating selection of local artists operating in a range of media. The exhibition during our visit, “Clay”, included a delightful (and sometimes thought-evoking, challenging, or wondrous) assortment of pottery from artists across the region. And of course, unlike a museum, works are available for purchase – including many at an accessible price.

Nothing New Quality Threads
Nothing New Quality Threads | 165 Brumley Ave NE, Concord, NC 28025
Nothing New is a secondhand shopper’s dream – especially if you’re into vintage wear from our local sports teams (you gotta love a 90s Hornets jersey!). I loved sifting through a really cool array of vintage sweaters and jackets. Just a heads-up: these aren’t Goodwill prices; you’ll pay more for their expertly curated selection of high-quality clothing in excellent condition.
WHERE TO EAT + DRINK IN CONCORD
Press & Porter Coffee & Pourhouse
Press & Porter Coffee & Pourhouse | 8 Union St S, Concord, NC 28025
It’s easy to see why so many locals choose to start their day in Concord at Press & Porter: it’s incredibly cute and cozy with a menu of your favorite coffee drinks (just look at how sweetly they decorated the space for the holidays!). And while I didn’t personally have the chance to experience this, I suspect it’s also a great place to wind down the afternoon over a glass of wine or local beer. With a large bookshelf of available books and board games, I’d say you should feel comfortable lingering awhile.

Gianni’s Trattoria
Gianni's Trattoria | 16 Union St S, Concord, NC 28025
On a chilly North Carolina day, there’s nothing better than a good, hearty meal. We sought comfort at Gianni’s Trattoria, a classic neighborhood Italian restaurant with a fantastically priced lunch menu. Two garlic knots might seem excessive, but I promise you’ll use both to swipe up every bit of their delicious red sauce.

Lil Robert’s Place
Lil Robert's Place | 25 Union St S, Concord, NC 28025
Lil Robert’s Place might just be the best dive bar in the area (that feels like such an oxymoron, right?). Grab a pint of beer from one of the many local taps at the bar and set off to explore all the fun and funky art on the walls. It has that quirky, lived-in charm that can only come with time and an aversion to the typical.

Southern Strain Beer Company
Southern Strain Beer Company | 165 Brumley Ave NE Suite 3001, Concord, NC 28025
Southern Strain was closed for a private event on the day of our visit, but they graciously set up a small selection of beers in the adjoining space for those seeking a pint. We had the pleasure of sipping on a Hop Helix while shopping at Nothing New, but I definitely want to return to get the full experience. We’ve enjoyed some of their beers at their Charlotte location, so I know something good is always brewing.

Gibson Mill Market
Gibson Mill Market | 305 McGill Ave NW Bldg. 200, Concord, NC 28027
Because I always want to try everything, a food hall is a great place to eat while visiting a new spot. The newly-opened Gibson Mill Market is beginning to fill with tenants, including the five I visited below:
Taco Street
Taco Street | 325 McGill Ave NW, Stall #2, Concord, NC 28207
Tacos are my weakness, so I couldn’t simply walk past Taco Street. This authentic taqueria features a few dishes that I’m so happy to finally start seeing on menus stateside, like quesabirria, tacos al pastor from the trompo (pictured), and esquites. The birria is a little less crispy than the versions I had in its birthplace of Guadalajara, but I’m all too happy to trade hours of flight for a thirty-minute trip up the road to enjoy it.

Johnny Roger’s BBQ & Burgers
Johnny Roger's BBQ & Burgers | 305 McGill Ave NW Suite 203, Concord, NC 28027
This family-owned restaurant with a fun and clever name (according to the owners, with a family full of Johns and Rogers, it only made sense!) has two locations in Concord, including its newly opened spot in Gibson Mill. With a menu of barbecue, burgers, and chicken sandwiches, Johnny Rogers brings a bit of comfort food to the table. It’s also the home of Cabarrus County’s best burger: the Candied G.O.A.T. Burger, which is topped with creamy goat cheese, candied bacon, crispy onion frizzles, housemade Smokehouse Aioli, lettuce, and tomato. Could we possibly order anything else? The combination of sweet, salty, crispy, and creamy is truly burger perfection.

Defined Coffee
Defined Coffee | 305 McGill Ave NW, Concord, NC 28027
Defined Coffee has locations in neighboring Huntersville, Mooresville, and Denver – and now they can add Gibson Mill Market to the list. Although it was pretty late in the evening for a coffee, neither Michael nor I could resist the smell of freshly ground, locally roasted, single-origin espresso. I’m grateful we decided to share a beverage at the late hour; at 6 oz., it was the largest Cortado I’ve ever received!
–
Cara’s Cookie Company
Cara's Cookie Company | 305 McGill Ave NW #200-8, Concord, NC 28027
The inspiration for Cara’s Cookie Company is heart-wrenching, but the owners have found the sweetest way to turn a tragic situation into something truly remarkable. Through sales of big, chewy, Levain Bakery-like cookies, they are donating a portion of their profits to provide support and services to parents whose infants have been diagnosed with a terminal disease.

High Branch Brewing Co.
High Branch Brewing Co. | 305 McGill Ave NW #100, Concord, NC 28027
High Branch Brewing Co. is a family-owned brewery located on the lower level of the new Gibson Mill Market. And judging by the number of little ones running around during our visit, it’s a popular spot for families to hang out, too! The space is big and beautiful, with so much room to spread out and relax. Their ten-barrel production system puts out a variety of beer styles, from IPAs to Stouts to Sours, and their rotating series of events means you have an excuse to return to try them all (not that you need one!).
WITH MORE TIME IN CONCORD
Although we spent a very full twelve-hour day in Concord, I left feeling as though we barely scratched the surface. I’d love to return and experience a NASCAR race one day, but before then I hope to visit a few additional restaurants and local spots: Havana Carolina, 2 Gals Kitchen, Birritaco, Groundwork Common, The Basement Arcade Bar, Cabo Winery, Cabarrus Brewing, and Tutti’s Italian Market and Deli.
OUTFIT DETAILS
A chilly day one week before Christmas called for warm, comfortable clothing. Layered in sumptuous cashmere and wool, and topped with a festive scarf, this was the perfect travel outfit for the day: once I put it on, I could completely forget what I was wearing and enjoy my day exploring.
