I’ve wanted a silk slip dress for so long -as a nineties kid, I thought they were the just chicest thing. Showing a little skin and a hint of what lay underneath but not revealing everything, the women I saw wearing them always seemed so confident and sure of themselves.
Chasing that feeling, I’ve tried on a few over the years – and even went so far as to purchase a similar style dress from Everlane (worn here, which sadly no longer fits) – but none were ever quite right. As a woman who is #blessed in the hips and bum department (note: you are only permitted to read that phrase in a tone dripping with sarcasm), I struggled to find a dress that could accommodate my lower half without the burden of excess fabric around my bust.

After reading other blogs sing the praises of Quince’s 100% Washable Silk Slip Dress, I started paying attention. And after other successful Quince orders, I decided to take the plunge and order it.
I spent way too much of my life poring over the reviews trying to decide between ordering a small or medium. Because Quince incentivizes leaving reviews with photos, thankfully there were a lot of reviews for this dress. Ultimately, I landed on the size small, knowing it wouldn’t be too difficult to return and reorder a medium if needed.
Nine days later, the package was at my door. I was a little nervous opening it, both because I’ve been disappointed so many times before and because this dress seems to magically work for everyone else and it really would be my luck that it wouldn’t work for me.
I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I held my breath when trying it on, but that’s just what you do when you build something up so much in your head. I’m sure I audibly sighed once it glided over my hips – skimming them, but not stretching across them.
So enamored with this dress, I insisted on going out for cocktails the day it arrived as an excuse to wear it and to take photos for this post, giving it the laziest blast with my garment steamer (judging from the wrinkles here, I should have given it another pass – whoops).
For my first wear, I chose to let the dress shine. A pair of minimalist boots℅ and a cozy cardigan (reviewed here) were really all this dress needed on a mild late-winter evening, but the styling possibilities are almost endless.
A few ideas: a crisp poplin button-down underneath for a work-play mashup, a chunky sweater worn on top to give the illusion of a skirt, or a leather moto jacket to blur the lines between tough and tender (you can find even more styling inspiration saved on Pinterest).

Cool – so it fits and you can wear it a lot of ways, but how does it feel? What’s the quality like? Supposedly this thing is washable? And most importantly – what’s the bra situation like?
Well, I’m so glad you asked. The fabric feels soft and cool against the skin, and the bias cut gives it enough stretch for the wearer to move and sit comfortably. The silk is definitely a little shiny, but not too shiny, in my opinion – and in the black colorway, at least, is fully opaque. The weight of the silk feels not too light or heavy, but just right.
Adjustable straps help provide additional coverage up top (or reduce it, however you prefer!), which is also helpful when considering wearing a bra underneath. This decision – to wear a bra or not, or to have the straps showing or not – is truly a personal choice.
I prefer the support of a bra and generally choose to suffer through the discomfort of wearing a strapless one for aesthetic purposes; for days where I don’t want to deal with that, I can layer a tee or turtleneck underneath and wear my usual bra (side note: I’ve also just ordered these and I’m cautiously excited about the possibilities they may usher in!).
Although the dress isn’t skintight, the silk doesn’t really leave much to the imagination. To alleviate panty lines without resorting to constricting shapewear, I prefer to wear soft slip shorts. Again – this all comes down to personal preference.
As for washability, Quince indicates this dress can be placed in a mesh bag and machine-washed inside out on delicates. While I do wash some of my silk garments this way, I’m choosing to not tempt fate with this dress just yet. Instead, I’m hand washing it with cool water and a gentle soap and laying it flat to dry.
All-in-all, I’m feeling pretty smitten with this dress – and for just $79.90, it’s a real steal. If you see me around town wearing it like, a lot, well, just know that I’m a proud outfit repeater. Who wouldn’t want to wear their favorite things all the time?

Did I miss any of your burning Quince silk questions? Let me know in the comments!
And I’m curious – have you ever spent years on the hunt for just the right garment? Did it pay off?
That dress is perfect on you! I’ve been trying out some of Quince’s other washable silk items, and so far I’m impressed.
Thank you! Ooh, which ones have you tried so far?
I have the slip skirt, a tank, and a camisole. Review forthcoming!
Oh I’ve been so curious about this dress. A black slip dress has been on my wishlist for a long time. This one looks great on you!
Hi! Can I ask about your measurements?
I’m not sure what size to get. I was leaning toward a a medium but I’m small chested and didn’t want it to be huge up to. For reference my measurements are 35 bust, 29 waist and 39 hips.
Thank you!
Hi there – sure thing! We’re pretty close in measurements – mine are 35″-28″-40.5″ – so I’d recommend going with a small.
