Happy Summer!
Weather-wise it’s felt like summer here since, oh, April or so – but now that the kids are out of school and the college students have returned to their hometowns for the next few months, my city has thinned out and I’m finally getting to enjoy a slower pace of life.

I’ve never lived up north, but I suspect that things really kick into high gear once June hits – pool parties, summer barbecues, the reopening of ice cream stands, and camping on the beach… But it’s so hot here and in Florida, things tend to slow down from June through August.
Everyone heads indoors by 11 a.m., and most people don’t reappear until around 4 o’clock. Most summer days (excluding work days) at home I find myself reaching for the same things: tank tops in silk or linen, denim or sometimes silk shorts, and sandals. But when I travel during the summer months, I prefer to head north, and when I do I want to dress chic for the warm weather (and not for the swamp in which I currently reside).
To step out of my jeans and into something more elevated, my closet could use a new piece or two.
SUMMER 2019 TRAVEL STYLE WISH LIST
Clothing
| tops || 1. Silk Camisole | 2. Irwin Bodysuit | 3. Renata Silk Blouse || bottoms || 4. Amandine Skirt | 5. Cotton Twill Short | 6. Beck Pant || dresses + jumpsuits || 7. Gathered-Neck Maxi Coverup | 8. Wrap Dress* | 9. Merino Jumpsuit |
Surprised to see a little color in here? Me too. I’ve found myself passing over my beloved black garments as I’m getting dressed in the morning, reaching for pretty shades of emerald, ivory, and rust. While I never see myself owning a full rainbow of colors, I am looking to lighten my closet a little.
Linen and silk are natural summer fibers, but believe it or not, we should be considering merino in the warmer months as well. Yes, wool can be a summer fabric too! Merino is naturally odor-repelling, and in a lightweight weave can feel cool and pleasant on the skin. While I might not reach for it in triple-digit forecasts, I think it’s a great fabric to wear on warm summer evenings. And in jumpsuit form, it can be worn alone as a single-garment outfit or with layers on top or beneath.

Shoes + Accessories
| shoes || 1. Isla Slide Sandal [save 20% with code WAYWARD20] | 2. Moroccan Slide Sandals | 3. Aymar Strappy Sandals* || accessories || 4. Wide Strap | 5. Chunky Circle Hair Clip | 6. Skinny Leather Belt
Frankly, I don’t like wearing a lot of accessories in the summer. They feel a bit fussy (and then you have to worry about where to put them if you’re going swimming!) and summer isn’t a time for fuss. So this season I’m looking to add a few things to my wardrobe that make my life easier, like this wide strap to add to my crossbody purse to keep it secure and this barrette to pull my hair away from my face. On the shoe front, I don’t need much at the moment, but I would like to add a light-colored slide and a neutral, summer-friendly (and ankle-friendly) heel.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON SUMMER TRAVEL STYLE
I’m grateful to be at a point where I feel more content with my closet, and though I don’t think I’ll ever hit a point where I’ll say “I’m done shopping for good,” I feel like I have the appropriate items for just about any situation. These exercises of creating a seasonal wish list have proven incredibly helpful in identifying minor gaps in my wardrobe and determining which items I’m really drawn to, as opposed to something chosen on impulse or because it looked good on someone else.
I know I can’t afford to purchase everything on this list and expect to be able to travel at the same rate, but that’s okay. I’ve got three more months to mull things over and decide which items will best serve me this summer and for many to come!
